Chapter Sixteen

Will

The last thing I want is to skip Daphne’s ascension party, not just because it’s somewhere I should show my face for the image of my family, but because I would much rather stay to make sure everything goes smoothly. I slip out the large double doors, hoping if she sees me leave, she will forgive me when I explain why later.

The halls are deserted except for two guards. They know me. They nod and let me pass, undisturbed. I’ve seen it in Daphne’s face tonight as she used her power, the pain, the control she’s trying desperately to hold onto. That little charm on her ankle won’t be enough. She needs this curse removed, and I can’t sit around pretending to drink any longer—I prefer total awareness and control, and tend not to drink—watching her struggle. Though, I have to admit, if I didn’t know her, I doubt I would notice the struggle at all. But I do.

I push the door open, the infernal bell jingling above my head. This time, I don’t have to call out. The Elder is sitting at the front, behind her little counter, her silver head bent over a book. She raises it at the sound of the bell and blinks at me. ‘I didn’t expect you until later. Was the party dreadfully boring?’

‘No, not at all. It was grand, actually. The Heiress was beautiful in an emerald gown—’ I cut myself off, clearing my throat. ‘I just grew impatient, I’m afraid, but I stopped by the mines.’ I drop a heavy leather satchel of gems and stones onto the counter. In truth, I paid a miner to gather them for me, as I didn’t have the time or the inclination to be digging through dirt, leaving him with a hefty payment of his own.

The Elder’s grey eyes widen. ‘Well, I hope I have earned that. Any developments in your cursed women?’

‘I believe it grows worse by the minute, but not drastically, no.’

She spins the book around to me. ‘I’m afraid there’s a bit more to it than the name suggests. You might want to flip that sign.’ She nods at the door, and I do as she asks.

‘What do you mean?’ I peer down at the book, but spells are not my forte.

‘The name, mirror, suggests that what happens to one, happens to the other, hmm?’ The Elder points at the book. ‘But I’m afraid, with enough power, especially if one is elsewhere, it could be much worse than that.’

‘Did I mention I was feeling impatient?’ I ask, an edge to my voice. Daphne’s life is in danger, I need answers, not riddles.

‘You did.’ She taps the book. ‘What I’ve discovered suggests that, assuming one cursed woman is here—?’

I nod.

‘Then she might get the worst of it, if this is where the curse was cast?’

‘It was. How so?’

‘This describes more than a mirror-curse, but a twinning-curse. They can be confused, or, sometimes, they can be used together. It’s not common because the results are always wildly varied.
